Here's a few virus removal tools, that are certainly worth keeping on hand. Now they don't replace your current AV, but more so can be used to remove malicious content that your Antivirus failed to detect.

Kaspersky: http://www.kaspersky.com/virus-removal-tools

Avira AntiVir: http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-removal-tool

Avast: http://www.avast.com.au/utilities/virus-cleaner

McAfee Stinger: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx

For virus threats (or even if I think my PC has a threat), I use Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, Rkill, Glary Utilities, JRT, and Bitdefender. I scan the PC with all the ones I stated, and if nothing comes up, then my PC is clean. Still, you should have a good firewall, antivirus, antimalware, etc; just so you won't have to worry about your PC getting hit by attacks or something.

I use Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, Roguekiller, and Usbfix(for flash drives). I've noticed that back then, when I was using Avira it would not detect some of the malware that Malwarebytes or the others I've mentioned can detect. There were also times where my game would lag because of Avira, and it would play smoothly when I disabled Avira.
