Are games better with or without clans?

Yep, I'm there to enjoy myself not deal with drama. Thankfully, most of the time, being in a guild was a pretty good experience for me. Most of the people I ran with were cool. I have a lot of good memories of playing with some of them. There are even a few that I still talk to, all these years later.

That's one of the positives of being in a guild or clan. If you're lucky enough to make lasting friendships, in game and out, it's a great thing.

Ah an active and helpful guild is the gem! It made tedious questing much more manageable with tossed in humor and some organization from veterans. It's great when someone decided to rally a group up for a zone event, or just to chill in the housing or chat. Of the two guilds I joined, one didn't appreciate quiet players like myself, the other had fewer demands. Guess which I had a great time playing and memeing with.

Ironically I am still in good communication with someone in the first who defended me. Small virtual world, no?

I think it largely depends on the clan that you're in. I am always in for the social clan as I love to interact with people, but there was one time where I joined a competitive clan and it gave me a very different vibe and feel to the game. The atmosphere in the competitive clan was too serious and nobody would even talk except when they want to team up for a map. I hated that feeling and I thought I would be better off without them. I then came back to a social clan and stayed there because it makes the game more fun for me.

It depends on the game and on the people who might be with you in the clan. In general I pretty much always liked the idea of clans in multiplayer games, but when it comes to competitive games heavily based on PVP, it can suck. Most stronger player will tend to stick together and pick on smaller fishes.

Been in a couple of those myself. I think that if the game focuses on team play over solo play such clans can ruin your gaming experience. Imagine working for a company where everyone looked after themselves only, Their only interest was the paycheck. Same deal. That's why I favor games that don't emphasize team playing. If it happens great if not then you can enjoy the game by yourself all the same.

I think there is much fun to have or be a part from a clan. I agree with WarVet it's helpful when you can try clans before you actually join them, beacsuethat is the way in which you find your right place and see if you fit in that game!

I strongly agree. In the little experience I've had with MMORPGs, clans tend to be rather large, and you're assured to get at least a couple of unpleasant comrades in such mixed bags. Not to mention that beginners are usually looked down upon and it's easy to find old players who will boast their experience and drag you down.
I mean, it's not like all clans/gilds are like this, but, by the law of large numbers, you are expected to find some individuals who can ruin your experience, and it's hard to let it slide in a multiplayer-focused game.

Totally true. Some games have newbies protection that prevents new players from being killed of mugged. And some encourage and reward kindness to new players. But you said it yourself there will always be that prick among the sheep. It sucks when you depend on other to succeed. I used to play a mob game where you needed your boss to promote you when you reached a certain rank. The concept is great but when I found myself stuck in lousy families it sucked. We couldn't quit the families also for obvious reasons.

When i have the opportunity i always join guild or clan. Guild can help you a lot to level and grow your character. You will never get bored grinding and hunting when you are with your guildmates. Trust me it is super fun doing dungeons with your guildmates because most of the time when you are resting you can talk to them. You can also avoid loot runners when you hunt with your guildmates. The fun will escalate to the highest level when the game you are playing has the mode "guild wars". The best game i enjoyed the most when it comes to guild war was the classic game Ragnarok's War of Emperium.

Playing games with clans are better IMHO, they provide support to you whenever you need some, and there's also the occasional bragging rights if you are part of a famous clan or guild. And while you say you might get bullied if you're playing alone, that's actually the very reason why you get to join a clan too! Remember that in EVE, playing alone is a very dangerous task!

It really depends, i play solo in MMORPG games. Some games I do join clans or guilds to gain exp and trade items faster.

I guess you're right, but in PvP-centric games having someone as backup is a really good thing to have. Else they'll all just gang up on you. I agree on the exp and trading aspect too, there are some quests that are only available to you are part of a clan or a guild and trading is generally faster since you have your guildmates to ask if they want something to trade.

That's precisely why I value games that don't "force" you to team up. No risk of getting killed or mugged if you don't join a clan or guild. Do you want to make friends? Great. Want to play the loner? It's definitely harder but I don't see why they should punish it.

Yes I support the idea of clans in online games. This enable team work in gaming and also increase the fun. This kind of game is what I like to called social gaming because it enables discussion and interaction amongst gamers.

This. I really like a game when they can incorporate teamwork into it. In a multiplayer game, gamer's interaction amongst each other is the backbone of the community. And that's what makes the game continue on being successful and played by a lot of people. A multiplayer game wouldn't be multiplayer without the interaction between the players!

Yes right that is one thing that keeps me going back to these online multiplayer games. It goes beyond mere gaming experience it gives memory of interaction, group discussions and socialising. So excellent.

I have considered participating in a clan before. My roommate used to play Mafia Wars and he made a lot of close friends while playing that game. All of the members he met while they were on his team or in his mafia. I guess I would rather make friends in the real world, but a clan could be good too.

To be honest it really depends on the game. In old WoW, like around the Burning Crusade/Wrath of the Lich King times, guilds provided a sense of community and you'd really get to know each and every one of your guild members in and out of the game. I was with a guild for over 4 years through my on and off playing of WoW and I still remember details about their lives today. I'd sometimes even look forward to getting onto WoW to talk to them and it really made my WoW experience much better. Nowadays though, with the age of guild rewards and spam invites when you're not in a guild, there's really no sense of community and most guilds are essentially just bands of people who will never talk to eachother and are just in it for the rewards. It's not all bad, however, since the game now is much more fun and engaging when questing with more in-depth story quests and cutscenes, rendering the need for a community feeling in a guild practically useless.

I hear what you are saying. I just don't think it would be worth it for me to do, but other people obviously feel differently. I just want to basically game casually I think.

Yeah, it seems they get rewards for getting more member the famous "Member whoring". It disrupts the purpose of online gaming which is making friends yes? That's why I prefer games that don't force you to get in a clan. If you like and if the clan is good you can get in it and stick to it. If you want to be a loner that's okay too no penalties.
