Well, most of the people would say vbulletin here. Lately, people are going for Xenforo and IPB, instead of vbulletin. If they are into free software instead, then mybb or phpbb are their choices. I have heard of some other software like wotlab, simpleforums, ZetaBoards...whatnot.
So, what according to you is the best forum software? As for me, I would go for mybb. You can get plenty of plugins and the support is great. All you have to do is go for a premium mobile friendly theme and you are all set.
