I think most of such games are possible with Unity. I have seen some people making use of the Unity 2D for some games. And some may be possible with the Unity 3D functionality. Either way you have lot more control with their editors and engine. You may however be better off making some other engine like Torque to make simple projects and then switch to Unity.
