Do you think the Wii U needs a name change?

I've heard that many people are really getting board of the Wii and that the Wii U WILL need a name change if it wants to be a big hit.

Sources tell me that people are hoping for a surprise come E3 in the next 5-6 weeks, which I bet will happen. Hopefully they can make it appealing to hardcore gamers like myself.

Hell yes, Wii U? Seriously? Come on Nintendo that sounds lame and sounds like your trying to cling to the Wii name which is pretty much dead.

But I did get a good laugh when they announced the name back at E3'11.

It does sound quite lame. And the name "Wii U" isn't appealing to any hardcore gamers as far as I am concerned.

I like it. Also, you have to remember that everyone laughed at the Wii's name whe =n it was first announced, but that didn't stop anyone from buying it, did it?

I didn't laugh at the Wii's name. Kind of liked it. But just adding U to the end of it? That got me laughing.

Agreed. It's just like any other console trying to personalize the name. They need something for the hardcore gamers!

only way they will get me back fully is come out with something like the N64. Miss those days, so very much.

Yea cause if this really is supposed to be a new console they should differentiate it from the Wii, but then again its going to be similar to the wii soo... they should change the U!

I agree the N64 was a cool console and the Wiiu is just a daft name. Nintendo has had it's day in my view.

I do think it needs a name change. You can see that some of the popular names are easy to remember. The Will U seems to be not attractive. I am guessing they have to work on the marketing for this to work. So far not many people have found this attractive. But who knows it could work it lot better way.

I honestly do not know why it was called Wii in the first place. I know Nintendo screwed up when they went from an awesome name of GameCube to Wii to Wii U.

I don't know if OP is still here (post is 5 years old) but yeah I never even once thought of buying a Wii U. Pretty much a failure, but I wonder if it will be a sought after collectors item down the road, or maybe it already is. I do have a 3DS and I do love it. Don't see myself buying a Switch either.

I've always thought the Wii products were for kids, or for parents who want to play with their kids in today's modern age; so I never really paid attention to it. Last I played Mario was Mario 64 on a PC emulator, and I never really got hooked because of the whole 80s arcade theme where you die after one mistake. I don't have such patience and I honestly applaud those gamers in the 80s who had to endure those 1 hit lifepoints, and having to replay the game from the start just for losing in a mistaken move or something.

Considering the thread's years old, I'd argue the question's obsolete. That said, I honestly don't believe a name change would have changed the Wii U's ultimate fate. (I'm also a college student who has no children; I just like the Nintendo-specific properties.)

I do personally enjoy the Wii U enough, for what games I have for it. But compared to the likes of the Wii (where you could at least make a few jokes about that and its main controller) I feel like the Wii U was ultimately
A) underwhelming in features/sell points by comparison (the GamePad screen comes to mind, especially because there's very few games I know off the top of my head where use of the GamePad screen is vital to gameplay)
B) difficult to put games on that weren't created specifically for Wii U, so third-parties often ignored it (so if you wanted those games you'd have to go elsewhere - thus less incentive to buy Wii U). I'm sure Project CARS wasn't the only multiplatform game to cancel Wii U releases simply because of that.

I've known that for years actually. In my opinion next generation consoltes have grasped a concept that Nintendo hasn't. Videogames aren't only for children anymore. Sony and Microsoft have understood that and kept on making games with adult content. Actually i think that the only thing that is still holding Nintendo together are thei life long classics.
