First, for my personal taste (prioritizing the genres that I like best). Second, according to the reviews that I read (I like to know what the critics are thinking of the games). Third, by my friends' comments (especially those that are more up-to-date).

I would say that obviously the price influences my choice a lot because if an old game is selling for $40-$60 I'm not going to buy it because that is an absurd amount of money for an old game. I would also say that reviews influence my decision because people are honest about their reviews so if the game is gettig bad reviews, chances are the game is not that good. SO that is what mainly influences my game purchasing.

I read game reviews on youtube and forums , blogs.I read the description about the game.I search for system requirement ,features, mechanics of the game. The opinions about expert is also important to me.they give us valuable feedback about the game.

I also find them important, but do you let yourself be influenced by them? :smirk: I mean... Would you stop buying / playing some game if it is bad one? Or do you read them just because you like to keep up with the news?

Personally, I've never really thought about my method towards buying games... But I do have my own technique I guess.

The gameplay trailer itself is the first major influence. Usually, that's the make or break moment for me and my interest (even though trailer gameplay can sometimes be false).

Second major influence would probably be my friend's reviews. Usually, I'm never the first person to buy a new release (I'm not that cool...). However, it gives me a chance to hear the reviews from my friends, as well as online gaming communities on the overall gameplay itself. Without giving too much away (spoiler) of the storyline.

Third would probably be the price. I use to fork out a lot of cash for new gaming titles. I'm not like this nowadays though. Despite this, the overall price of the game does play a key third factor in my overall interest. Also, like @SashaS said, Steam games do offer refunds which give you somewhat of a comfort in making your gaming decisions. Though the worst idea for me is having to return a game I just bought. Physically or digitally...

I have to say the reviews do make my mind up to a point. It's not a decisive factor and after I read a review I often go to Youtube for a gameplay and that indeed has a bigger say on whether I will but the game or not. Do you remember Hatred? It was highly criticized and still, it's one o the best games I played.

When I look for I game, I look for these three traits. A good trailer, multiplayer, and strategy. Typically games that offer DLC's I'll try to stay away from since I hate in-app purchases.

It depends on the situation in which I might be in.I watch trailers of the games, live streams, watching reviews on youtube or some other websites.Whatever excites and interests I go for the game that is available at particular time. This does not mean that I buy any games.

I am influenced by the reviews, but I don't stop buying or playing those games I already using just after reading bad reviews. If I like the game then no matter what the expert says about it.Anyhow , we buy game for having fun not to satisfy someone. The matter is any game I choose or play it totally dependent on my choice of fun I am searching for.

With Steam games, I usually browse around the store and find something interesting that I think I'd enjoy. I check that the price isn't ridiculous first, because there is no way I'm spending over $50 for a game. I can understand if you want to do that, but its not an amount of money I'd be willing to spend personally.

Then, of course, I read the description of the game and decide whether it has the features and mechanics that I'd be interested in trying out. System requirements is also a concern. Then I'd read some reviews on Steam and then get a professional opinion by visiting a review website like IGN or something. Then I'd check out some YouTube gameplay if I'm still not convinced. Then, I guess its time to buy.

Steam luckily does offer refunds so even after all that, if the game sucks, you can always get your money back.
I usually don't check sites like IGN. They get paid to advertise products, who's to say their review is unbiased? I read common player comments on Steam, since they are honest and they will tell you the reason why it's good or why they had to ask for a refund. I also sometimes go on Youtube to watch a segment of the game being played before I buy it. If I DO buy it, I'll play it and I have to decide in 2 hours of play whether I would stick to it or not, because Steam has a window of refund as long as the play time is not over 2 hours.

Choosing a game decides what you want, what can wait and what we are not interested in.How would you decide what platform you want a multi platform game? I have a PC , PS3, I am not addicted to gaming but usually go with my feeling. It is lik a priority thing.I want to play or buy a particular game is decided to be played on PC or my PS3.Whichever game is cheaper I go for it.Reviews and rating matters too.It more about experience about it.

If I've got my eyes on a specific game, the series it belongs to and its software house play a huge role in my final decision. Nowadays It's hard to tell a game's quality from trailers and reviews only, given how misleading they can both be, so I try to judge from experience as much as possible.
Graphics are not crucial, even though a good art style can sell me on a game. The genre is more of a general indicator, since I have bought games I thought I'd never play and actually surprised myself liking them.

You guys took the words right out of my mouth. It's hard to trust reviews that might be incentivized. I'd much rather hear from other players who have actually tried the game and played for more than a few minutes. An obligatory test run by a paid reviewer doesn't really cut it. I found that out when I read a review of one WoW expansion where it was clear that the guy had no idea what he was talking about after about two minutes in. It's like he loaded the game, ran around for a few minutes, and started writing. I want detailed information.

Again, my thoughts too. Graphics aren't at the top of my list, but like you the style does make a difference. The most important thing for me is the game play. How involved or in depth is it? Is it FUN?

Hi, well, this depends on the mood I have at that moment. If I am stressed out and tired, I will play something relaxing if I am upset I would play a shooting game to throw out all the tension I keep inside me. Maybe you will laugh but are moments when I am not only in the mood to play only PC gaming; I may play chess or a logical game with my son.

I think in exactly the same way. No review has this power over me, I just like to read them because I like to see some different points of view. I think it's kinda important, but it's not a decisive factor for me. :smirk:

I think the main function of reviews is precisely to plant some decisive point in the minds of the readers, but I think they can never be considered as decisive factors, after all... Each person has a different point of view and you can't let them "decide" anything for you.

Yes you are right. Many persons give review to influence us and make us to buy their recommended product, but it is us who decide what type of game we want.We read reviews to keep us update about new game come in the market, not to be influenced and carried away with them.

For me though I have a certain bias on pixel games. It's 2017. I don't care if the game is breathtaking or groundbreaking. Last pixel game I played was Pokemon Yellow. 17 years later I still see pixel games and they're priced $10+ when not on sale. I'm not paying that much when 3D games or at least 2D games out there has great art style or effects. Ori and the Blind Forest for example. Great music, great art style, great gameplay. I don't mind the 2D metroidvania game type. It's just fun and your eyes don't hurt after a while of looking at pixel scenery.

Won't that kinda get repetitive though? Most of the games you mentioned are first person shooters. Can you really play enough of those without feeling bored? It's just point and shoot until the target dies. I for one enjoy sword-shield-magic combat more. It's more complicated and more interactive than pointing at something and hitting the left mouse button over and over. I still enjoy them, but I get bored with FPS games easily.
