Map with Pins program

I am looking for a program or a tool that allows me to place pins on a map. each pin would contain information about the location.
if the same program could tell me how far apart the nodes were (timewise) that'd be excellent.

Google maps helps me get distance but I can't make pins to remember places

I can imagine this has been done before.
There's actually an online service that does it I think but it's a subscription service for schools.
