I'm curious about the upcoming model and found this article where the author talks about their speculation about the upcoming Wii U.
It's an interesting theory but doubt that Nintendo would go that route. They think that if Nintendo removes the game pad it can cut the price and somehow get the 3DS to serve as an alternative.
Although unlikely, I think it would be effective IF the price dropped significantly otherwise it wouldn't be worth it.
