Why is there no Dungeons and Dragons love?

I’ve been a D&D player for going on 19 years now, and yes I am talking about the pen and paper version where you have to use your imagination and nasty stuff like that.

I was kind of curious as to why we don’t have a topic for that here on the forums? I was pretty sure that I was not alone in my electronic gaming love as well as my love of the pen and paper version, but maybe I am.


Do we have any DnD pen and paper players here? If so, why are you guys and gals all hiding in the wood works? Let’s get out and make a difference on the forums and push to get a forum all of our own!

I have played this game a long time ago...isn't this game a paid game? I remember that I have made 2-4 euros on and when I saw that my balance was not growing since I was playing every day, I gave up on it. The game was a good game but I felt a bit limited there, that is the biggest reason why I gave up on playing D&D.

I've never actually played Dungeons and Dragons. I have heard the name of this game tossed around for years on TV and with friends. But for me, it's never been a game worth looking into, let alone playing. What's idea of the game? Seems interesting but also a little boring too...

Any thoughts?

Essentially what you do is you sit down and create a character, this is done by setting up basic attributes like Cha, Dex, Str, stuff like that. Choosing a background like sailor or hermit which gives you access to certain abilities and skills. After that is done you pick up some skills, Acrobatics, Deceptions, Persuasion, Knowledge Nature, basically generalized skill sets.

What this does is allow you to be able to roll a dice to add "randomness" to the world. A 20 sided dice is rolled to decide what happens when you are attempting to do a skill.

So you come to a tightrope bridge across a giant chasm, Guarding the bridge is a black knight.

You use the skill persuasion, rolling the D20 to try and beat the number 10.

You talk your way past the black knight, move across the tight rope using the skill acrobatics, trying to beat a 15.

Once you cross the bridge, you fight 20 goblins with your giant halberd.


Its fun because anything you can imagine you can do.

No, that was the point of the post! This is a game that after you buy the books, I know books! All you need is a piece of paper and a pencil and a few different dice. Then you need an imagination and a few friends. Everyone sits around a table, rolling dice talking, making jokes and eating food. It usually lasts 3-6 hours and is a ton of fun.

I know Dungeons and Dragons just by name, and I always wanted to learn it.. .but I feel like there are a immense amount of rules, and I have no one to play it nearby who can actually teach me. This is for the game in real life.
But since this is a videogame forum, I'll say that I played a bit of games based on the Forgotten Realms - mostly Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate. Of course they aren't nothing like playing the actual rpg, but the setting is the same, so I guess we could include them...

Well, it seems interesting. Thank you for the quick synopsis! I'm always open to trying any game, generally speaking. Sounds like it's worth giving it a shot.

Well, I am form Venezuela, and the first time that I heard of Dungeons and Dragons was like 15 years ago, I was 6 years and my father say something about it (I barely remember that), and I ask what was that thing about Dungeons and Dragons and he told me that it is a game that people from the US play and it was using the imagination, and I was very excited listening the explanation, I would love to play that game someday in my life, but well, this country is very bad to be playing...

I still have tons of love for Dungeons and Dragons--in truth, it was my first RPG--I started playing this game when I was around ten, and I still play it now with a group of friends periodically. I would get really attached to a character, and often he would be killed during a campaign, and I would sit there while all the cool treasure, armor, and weapons it took me to collect over months was handed out to my fellow team members.

I have played alternate versions of the pen and paper thing. I think that with the advent of internet and technology the real thing was forgotten. Except for the occasional old school player who still keeps the tradition alive. It's just how things flow, the old get replaced by the modern technologies who in turn get replaced by other more modern ones.

I'm the DM of a group of two players and we've been playing for two years. It's incredibly fun, even if it's just the two of them. In the beginning, there were 4, but 3 didn't like the concept of having to imagine things so they bailed. One dude really loved it though and he asked me if I could DM a solo campaign for him which I did for a while. Then his friend joined in and it's really been fun. I wouldn't mind have more people, but this is fun too. And you gotta remember that, having fun is the most important thing in D'n'D.

I played the arcade version (tokens and stuff) on an PC emulator as a kid. We had these emulators from old games and our PC wasn't that great, so we had to make due with pixel graphics and all that. It had 4 players, so we had to actually divide the keyboard assignment so we can play ALL characters at once. One had arrow keys, one used the number pad on the right, and the last 2 players shared the QWERTY keyboard section. It was fun, but I gotta say you die a lot in this game and I can just imagine the amount of tokens you had to buy in the arcade to actually win.

I did pay the arcade version of D&D too just like @OursIsTheFury but I didn't pay it using an emulator. I played it in an actual arcade machine. I remember wasting all my money purchasing tokens just to be able to continue playing. I wasn't very good at arcade games and I kept on dying. I purchased a lot of tokens that day, but I never finished the game

Fuck that, remember the huge dragon boss fight? I swear each character died at least 20 times there. I can't imagine the real life money you had to trade in the arcade for the tokens needed for that fight. When we played the emulator, "inserting coins" was as easy as pressing a button and you guys all had lives again. Yikes.

Yea I am pretty sure that there was quite a bit of games that came from it, I would almost go to the point of saying that there hasn't been a fantasy game that hasn't stolen something from Gary Gygax, he's pretty much the boss of all fantasy type of games. DnD and the idea of it, the ability to sit down and play with people, socialize and everything with everyone while enjoying a similar interest is super important.

To be honest, this is a pretty big misconception. I've been playing for over 15 years and have yet to see Lucifer come out of the wood work. I can promise that there is no summoning spells or devil worship involved. I would recommend doing some basic research before buying into big misconceptions!

It looked a lot like the Gauntlet series that I remember playing, it was a lot of fun and like many of the older folks here I spent a lot of quarters until I was able to get it onto the computer and I think on a consul of some sort. I can't remember, its been a long time since I actually played it. Still I wonder if those types of games are still playable nowadays. It would probably be pretty cool if you could get it on the iPad or something, you would just need a controller.

I agree! I love to play dnd but we did it over discord. I begin playing it and then shortly after I started playing, some new person joined and killed off everyone in the game ending it. so I haven't played since

Sounds like an ass who thinks he's special. There's always that one person who's friends with one of the group, but then tries to be the most popular or take over as the leader. It's always annoying. That's why I'd rather play solo stuff than have to deal with people like that.
