I would learn Lua instead. Many newer games use Lua because it's easier to use and leaves more things open to you. But if it's between Java and C#, why not both? Learn them both and see which one you like best for creating games. C# is newer than Java and easier to use but between those two...

I'm sad to say this but Sonic games are only getting worse and worse over the years. I feel like the only good Sonic games were the original ones. I wouldn't say that they're beating a dead horse but they've got no more creativity anymore or too much of it in some cases.
