The dictionary defines addiction as a strong and harmful need to regulary have something or do something (such as gamble or play video games). Take note of the words strong and harmful, and also the word need. You should be called a gaming addict if you already consider gaming as a need and in the process, you are also causing harm to yourself.

I've never reached the stage where I cannot live without video games. I never skipped meals or such. But I did play up to 1 or 2 in the morning before and I still do that sometimes today. If that's considered as harmful to me, can I also be considered as a gaming addict?

Hmmmm, game addiction! This is actually real and could happen to anyone if the time you devote to gaming isn't properly controlled. It almost sounds unreal and i would have thought so too if i haven't seen it happen to people. This is first hand experience not hear say. Seen a lot of colleagues at school miss classes, tests, exams cos of games. They were either tired from gaming all night or too busy gaming all day to forget a scheduled test, class or exam. Please how else does addiction manifest? itself if not by these means. Controlling game addiction is a conscious thing, you just need to check yourself always and ask questions like..am i going to the extreme for this thing? Could i go a day or even two without it? Please do check yourself from time to time. You don't want to get caught up in game addiction. Especially if you have a vision or purpose to achieve. GAME ADDICTION IS REAL! Check yourself every now and then please. Be cautious of it.

Gaming addiction is as detrimental as any other any other addiction. The fun part of gaming turns into an addiction when it starts overruling our mental and physical well-being. Anything beyond a limit is harmful and so is the case with gaming.

The boundary line might vary from person to person depending upon his situation and responsibilities. But the common factor among all is that if everything a person has in his mind is his game and his gaming console then he is an addict for sure.

I have seen a lot of gaming addicts, but a common thing about most addicts is that they refuse to accept they are addicted to gaming. But for me if gaming starts to take more than necessary portion of my time, it has become an addiction. When other activities of mine begin to suffer because of gaming then am addicted to it. There are a lot more yardsticks.

I'm that type of person who likes to game a lot, but when I have to work or do important things I won't play anything because there are priorities. We can talk about addiction when you lose sight of these priorities and everything else. If your personal life starts to suffer from your gaming, then we can talk about addiction. I don't think it is as strong as physical addiction, like addiction from drugs, but it is a serious problem if you don't do anything about it.

Well in my opinion I'd say that addiction comes in more of a spectrum than just one defined point. For example one may say that drinking alcohol twice a week isn't alcoholism. For the most part, I'd say it isn't either. But if you absolutely need to get drunk those days or else you aren't the same, you're an alcoholic. The same goes for anything else, including video games. Play as much or as little as you want, if you can go without it for a period of time without it negatively impacting you, you can say that you're not dependent. But if you go a while without playing video games and you start becoming depressed or bored, or that you play so much that it gets in the way of making healthy lifestyle choices, I'd start considering that a problem.

To me, you can say someone has a gaming addiction when they stop doing the normal things because of playing all day. Playing is recreational, you can take a few hours of your day to do it or even your weekend to play more hours. But if you start putting your life, friends, job and everything else on a side... then you have a problem.

Addiction would mean that one cannot physically separate from playing a game. I think if you spend all of your free time playing a game, it probably wouldn't be considered addiction yet, but if you forwent other essential things, it would be considered addiction. Of course the other side of addiction is when loved ones are affected negatively because of it.
Agree, for me addiction would mean that someone will stop doing his regular life to dedicate himself to the game, like stop eating or taking showers, or rather play the game than sleep. If someone stays a lot of time in the game, that is just beginner obsession maybe, usually happens when you start playing a new game, it gets interesting and you want to level up. After a while maybe you will find another game and will move forward with it.

Well, in my youth for me everything was my video games, I played 8 to 12 hours per day, I did not see my friends and I did not talk to my family, I only cared my video games, but yes, there is a line between passion and addiction and i passed it a long time ago, now in my 21 years old i changed a lot about that subject but still i play a lot.

Well, an addiction is a issue that makes a person act weird and have a obsessive desire for something, that desire make that person do anything to stay with it. The most of times the people thing that they have an addiction for games but it is only that they like that game very much and nothing else, but the other times the people can sleep, don't eat, are moody, don't interact with other people and don't go to the bathroom, these times is when the person is obsessed with the game and he/she need help.

I was myself addicted to gaming when I was still a teenager. I would spend hours playing a game and at times I would miss breakfast and lunch. However, spending too much time in front of my PS2 would often make me feel sick and I was obliged to take a rest. I was so addicted at this point that I was barely going out. I was not socializing. However, nowadays things are no longer the same for me. I still play my games but I try to take some time off to do other activities.

My nephew, a 8 year old kid is a game addict. If he is allowed to play games, he will simply refuse to go to a children park. If he is give a choice between chocolate, which he loves very much, and playing game. he will choose game. I have not seen any people more addicted to games like my nephew. I am not a gaming addict and I don't play games much.

As old timers might sort of say, "Free time is evil time.". ;) I mean, obviously, these people have a load of free time or they couldn't engage in the addiction. But note, it is true that people can make time, even people with a busy schedule.
