How would you rate Rift over 10?

Right now I would have to give Rift about a 5 or 6. Basically it's your run of the mill Warcraft-style MMO but there are some differences.

Pros:
Rifts that spawn elemental mobs to kill for loot, notoriety, achievements and quests.
Crafting rifts: same as above but offer special materials for your higher end crafted gear or upgrades.
Cross-shard/server trading and mail. Only works for similar clusters like all the NA or all the EU servers.
Dimensions: player made housing where you can literally build everything board by board or stone by stone if that's your thing.
Artifacts: Shinies! Collect them for achievements and special currencies that are needed for end-game upgrades or just bling like mounts, wardrobe stuff, some gear.
Wardrobes: Rift's version of Transmog. Hundreds of collectible sets and lots of achievements.
Achievements: Track your progress across various themes.
Good community: both in game and on forums, players will help each other.
Lots of online resources.
Frequent updates, large and small.

Cons:
The Dev team isn't the same as earlier versions so old stuff is being ignored.
Tech Support is a little slow and the various GM's or forum Mods don't always respond to issues the same way.
Big Time P2W. Cash shop for endgame or grind for ages on the new Eternal Weapons and armor questlines.
Sometimes the chat gets toxic but if you've played WoW and been around Goldshire then you'll know what to expect.

There's more that I've forgotten but I'm sure others will fill in the blanks. My old review of this game is still online here on GameRebels and most of the info is relevant.--except the version number of course. Now they're up to 4.1 almost 4.2

Cool, thanks for the breakdown @BrokenDownFlier. The pros make it sound really involved and engaging and fun. The cons make it a little bit "meh," but I guess you have to take the bad with the good.

So, if I understand you right, you can actually grind out the items that people can buy, but it's a slog, right? Or, are there things that you can only get in the cash shop that actually matter to end game?

Yes, you can grind out everything. I did leave out one minor "Con" and that's listing things on the auction house (AH) is behind a $5USD paywall. Once you get higher levels and have access to the AH to list, you can sell materials or crafted items to other players and eventually earn enough game coins (platinum is the highest) to buy a REX credit which can be converted into game credits. These credits let you buy the credit/cash only items in the shop. It's a serious grind though. Just like WoW used to be, grinding for platinum takes awhile.

I've played enough MMORPG's over the years to realize that not one of the many released will be ever perfect; they will all have some sort of "meh" factor. About the only thing I can honestly say is: play it for a bit without dropping any real money and see how well you like it. If you stick around and have a bit of loose change to drop, spend the $5USD just for AH access--even if you never spend another penny.

Okay, cool, thanks for the follow up. I don't mind paying a bit. I just don't want to get sucked in and then need to spend a ton to keep up. I think the five bucks would definitely be worth it to have access to the AH. Besides, they need to make money somehow, right?

That's true of all games. Nothing is going to be perfect, but as long as it's fun, I'm good. I think I will follow your recommendation and give it a shot. My cousin-in-law (is that a thing? lol), and I used to WoW it up, and we've been really bored without it. We've been trying to find something that we both like, so we can play together. I'll tell her about this.

RIFT gets a 7 from me. It's no longer optimized for my low-end card, integrated Intel HD 2000, which in turn makes all questing a choppy shore. Besides that, I love the different classes available, mainly made by users. I never knew about a healing mage, the Chloromancer, till I started playing.
A neutral, but negative point to me, is the fact that one can grind Instant Adventures, simply running around with groups to level up. While nice at first, you lose the story behind RiFT given by questing and dungeons.

My short review

I'd give it a 7 or an 8 any day. The game is very competitive and it can go head to head with any new released MMOs out there.
The classes are awesome and it has a lot of features.

If you haven't played in awhile, they've added even more roles to the class system. Most of these are unfortunately paid content available through various packs. The newest class is the Primalist, which has quite a few popular roles out now and in about 2 weeks will have another four or five. The additional roles will be free to anyone who has already bought a pack that contains the main Primalist class.

A brief note: you can currently get the Ascended Essentials Pack for $19.99USD (Regularly $39.99USD) until July 5th--unless they extend the sale, which they might do. This pack contains almost all the paid souls except the new ones coming out soon. You'd get:
Storm Legion Pack (4 souls)
Nightmare Tide Pack (4 souls)
Primalist Pack (Calling with 6 souls)
Ascended Pack (5 souls)
for a total of 19 souls plus 6 Character Slots per Server & Bag Slots 4 and 5 if you have not already gotten the last two items.

I will give it 8.
Rift is a fantasy free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-
playing game developed by Trion Worlds. Very interesting game

Rift is a good game, in my opinion, is a well-crafted game, with some fresh ideas and a nice class system, and this game offers a very classic approach to gameplay. That was almost all, because this game does a lot of things right, but nothing really new and the fact that it tries to compete with World of Warcraft makes me rate it 7.

Is that the problem? It just really doesn't do anything new and people see it as a WoW clone? I always wondered why it didn't fare better in the beginning (and why it went free to play). It sounded fun, and lots of people said that it was such a beautiful game (especially compared to WoW's old graphics). I really thought it was going to take off.

It still sounds fun, although my cousin in law doesn't want to play. I'm starting to think we'll never find the "perfect" game.

The thing that discourages me the most and made me eventually quit playing Rift is their Pay2Win system. It's like anything you do or grind for can easily be smashed by rich kids sitting on their computers all day. I mean, there's no problem with that ( I guess?) Because you also have the right to pay if you want to but not all want to use real money for a game.

Also, a friend who has played Rift and decided to quit recently, said that Rift is getting ridiculous and not worth it to play. He said that you are limited to the patch end game gears and every patch and updates, there are new contents and gears added which would make you mad because you grind all week or days for those set of items and a new patch just makes them all useless because another stronger one appears.

This is why I love WoW. Lol
