Technically, all games improve cognitive function by making you think and decide faster, solve puzzles, and look for weak points. Memory also gets honed because of remembering all the traps and door combinations in different games, as well as the locations of the items you'll need. But hey, maybe that's just what people say to each other to justify their gaming times :)

Great question! I would love to see games that boost the intelligence of ours. Using intelligence you have to be able to apply your knowledge and skills. Most people think video games can not boost intelligence and knowledge because they think that in video games you shoot others and have fun. That's where things get complicated! I would like to say to those people that this is not true, video games can boost your thinking. Take for example good old games like Myst and other similar adventure puzzle games. They were so hard that only a few people were able to finish the game without any help! Playing puzzle games i believe can help anyone create a logical thinking and as a result intelligence!

There was actually a formal study just done that demonstrate these games don't really boost your intelligence more than they help you maintain what you already have. Having said that, I think problem solving skills can be exercised to some minimal extent with games like sudoku. The problem though is that games tend to only provide a limited number of types of challenge and rarely throw anything genuinely new at you. You only then really get good at solving that specific type of puzzle, which may or may not has any real world applications.
Yes, I believe firmly in that. Games are great at boosting your rational thinking and problem-solving. ability. Still what bugs me is that spending too much time in front of the PC or in front of a console can have detrimental effects on your health. I think both physical and mental sides should be equally developed and studied.

Yeah, that makes sense. It's just like studying -- you have to actually spend time learning/studying the actual things you want to learn, or else it's not really helping. Doing puzzles might help you get better at doing puzzles, but it's not really going to help you with other things. And trivia games might teach you some random facts, but although trivia can be fun to know, it's not really the same thing as really fully learning about something.
